inspiration - my guardian angel by red jumpsuit apparatus, sound the bugle from the spirit soundtrack, you and me by lifehouse, (mostly) satellite heart by anya marina and i'm falling even more in love with you by creed
The day still looked as bleak as it had for the past week. The only difference was that it had stopped raining, for which Peter was grateful. A nurse, an older Hispanic-looking lady, not the nervous little mouse from before, had been nice enough to offer to wash and dry Peter's rain-soaked clothes in the hospital's downstairs laundromat where they washed the scrubs. She had assured him that she would wash them separate just in case any of the loads were from the surgical floor. Peter had just smiled and nodded, thanking her for her generosity. What did it really matter to him if his clothes got mixed with the bloody scrubs? It wasn't like they weren't caked with blood all the time nowadays anyway, or like he had anywhere special to go. So the nurse had taken his clothes, not seeming at all phased by Peter's laying on Autumn's bed shirtless with the sleeping girl curled against his shoulder, and went to wash them.
Seeing as they were about the only garments he had besides an extra t-shirt, a long cloak/jacket sort of thing, and extra underwear, he was very grateful. It was an especially nice feeling, wearing clean clothes that hadn't been washed in the river as he sauntered through the trees soundlessly to the edge of the road across from the hospital. Early that morning, so early that it had still been dark out, Peter had woken up and gently repositioned Autumn so that she was sleeping against her pillow rather than his shoulder. He'd found his clothes sitting on a chair beside the bathroom door. Taking advantage of the opportunity, he'd grabbed his clothes and hopped in the shower. Feeling refreshed and strangely relaxed, he'd left the hospital, hoping to stretch his stiff legs and find something to eat. He might have just eaten at the hospital if the cafeteria didn't make you pay for everything. But seeing as it did, he decided to revert to old habits. He hadn't realized how hungry he was until he snatched an apple from a street vendor when he hadn't been looking. He ate half the thing ravenously before throwing the other half as hard as he could into the forest. He'd been starving just a second ago, but now he felt bloated. He realized it was because he hadn't eaten anything since the day before Cassandra had attacked him and Autumn.
His body was rejecting the food substance because it was no longer used to consuming even normal amounts. He'd have to take it slow. Probably try to eat something every few hours to get his metabolism running right again. Although, maybe it wasn't such a bad thing. He didn't eat a whole lot to begin with, and this way, he wouldn't have to make such frequent visits to the market just to steal food. Yeah, but then you'll have a whole new mess of problems. Like you body deteriorating from lack of food. he thought sadistically. Somewhere in back of his mind he wondered if he could really die from something so... human, being what he was. But he was, after all, half human. He didn't even know what his life-span was going to be like. Would he live forever, the way all vampires did? Or did his human blood make him weaker, and more vulnerable to death?
The thought was gone before he could think anything more about it. Now he gazed across the street, up to the third floor of the building where Autumn's room was. The curtains were closed, but that was nothing new. He wondered if she would still be sleeping. It seemed unlikely since Autumn was a military officer who was used to getting up at five every morning. But given the circumstances (i.e. her injuries, the medicine-induced sleep, etc.), he wouldn't be surprised if she was still asleep.
He crossed the road, not knowing it but lucky to have missed the military jeep that had been sitting out front less than half an hour ago. The boy took the steps two at a time. Not because he was excited or nervous or wanted to get to her room faster, but because he had long enough legs that allowed him to do so. When he reached her doorway, he peeked inside to see if she was asleep, because if she were, he'd want to be quiet coming in.
Now here's the strange thing. Autumn wasn't there. At all. She wasn't standing in a corner being definant ("See? I can stand just fine on my own!") or in the bathroom, or even out taking more tests it seemed because besides that, her bed was made. Not just made. Her bed was pressed and folded nicely with fresh, clean sheets. The room had been tidied and, by the smell of it, sterlized, even though Autumn hadn't had any contagious diesese or anything. When the room was clean and the bed was made, it usually meant that it was ready for someone new.
An icy hand closed tightly around his heart as the slow panic began to settle in. As a quiet young nurse walked past, he grabbed her arm, his hand striking out faster than a coiled snake. "Where is she? What happened?" he demanded, staring the nurse down. His normally neutral grey eyes were blazing with anger and panic. Autumn couldn't be... she'd been fine just a few hours ago. There was no way she could be...
The nurse was speechless as she stared up at him with big, round eyes the size of dinner plates. "Where is she?!" he asked again, his voice raising violently. She glanced down to where he held her upper arm, beginning to shake with fear as she shook her head. "I... I d-don't know..."
"What do you mean you don't know? You're going to give someone else her room but you don't even know where she is?"
"I... I... I'm s-sorry, I d-don't k-know!" she whimpered, trying to pull away from him.
Someone walked around the corner just then, spying the pair outside Autumn's room. It was the nurse that had helped him the night before with his clothes. She realized what was going on and rushed forward to pull his vice-like-hand away from the girl's arm. "Stop! What do you think you are you doing?" Peter turned his heated glare to her. "Where is she?" he demanded again. The nurse looked over her shoulder into the room and realized what the boy must have been seeing.
"Oh! She's fine, honey! She discharged herself this morning and left in a jeep that picked her up out front. She left without any warning so there wasn't much we could do to stop her." Peter's eyes gradually faded from furious to confused. "A... a jeep?" "Yes, that's right. Don't worry, she's fine. She left sooner than the doctors would have liked, but like I said, we didn't really realize what'd happened until she'd already gone." "Oh..." Peter said, his eyebrows drawing together in contemplation. He turned to the other nurse. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you." he appologized, not looking her in the eye. She just nodded, still looking nervous. "Thanks." he murmured to the other nurse, who in turn gazed at him in concern as he turned and walked away, back down the stairs and into the parking lot, and then into the trees.
Autumn had left, and she'd left without saying goodbye. He didn't know why this should bother him. He narrowed his eyes. Fine. If she couldn't stand the sight of him for even one more second, let her run off, back to the military. It had to happen eventually. Why put off the inevitible? He strode off, deeper into the trees. What would he do now? He'd gone back to being alone, but this time, things were different. He was starting a new life... one without Autumn.

she sat silently in the passenger seat of the military jeep, her expression carefully blank in order to hide the turmoil lurking just behind her eyes. her thoughts falling back to last night and the feeling of being safely tucked into peter's arms, almost instantly she felt her eyes burning, her gaze growing blurry with the unshead tears. "you doing okay there, general" the gruff voice of her driver sounded over the humming of the engine. nodding, she shrugged "fine. just fine. mind hitting less ruts?" playing her tears off as pain from her still healing wound. "listen, autumn. you NEED to do this. the rest of our generals are either dead or pow's. you dont have a choice anymore." grinding her teeth, she merely nodded. of course she had to...but she would rather do this with peter than with the entire king's army at her side. she missed him. she really, really missed him- and yet she couldn't bring herself to order the private driving her to the base to turn around so that she could spend more time with peter. drawing in a long breath, she carefully cleared all thoughts of peter from her mind as she neared the base. soon she would face her superiors and then would be shipped off to the front lines again. it was up to her to stop this war and needless bloodshed. it all on her shoulders. she would finally meet the creature that was responsible for most of peter's suffering, she made a mental note to kill him slowly because of that. peter deserved to be....normal, though he would probably smack her for thinking so. he deserved to have a family and friends....and a girlfriend. he deserved that. though, in his normal life...she would have never met him. though it hurt, she would almost rather have never met if it meant that he could be happy.....wait. what in the HELL was she thinking? the whole 'if he's happy without me than so be it'...no. a low growl escaped her throat, though it was lost on the rumble of the engine, she did growl at herself. she was beginning to sound like a love sick puppy. rolling her eyes, she glared at the upcoming base. she was supposed to stop thinking about peter, so why was it that the harder she tried to forget about him- more memories flooded her mind? it was better this way. wasn't it? it was better that she ran out the second she could walk....well it was better for her, because one look at peter and she would melt. the second he said 'you can't leave because you're not fully healed' she would melt and would gladly stay in his presence awhile longer. and then she would get hurt again or something would happen that she wouldn't be able to leave right away....and then she would miss the war. yes, it was better this way.

his grin appeared first, followed by a glowing and glittering purple gaze. the stripes on his suit followed, and finally standing before peter was a male about peter's height and weight, though the newer male was about had less muscle and looked more of a skeleton. still grinning, pride fell instep behind the fast paced half-breed. "somebody looks angry." though it was a normal statement, his voice came out as sort of sing-song, a voice that you can just hear a smile in. "storming off again, mister peter? are ye mad because the lass ran off? or are ye mad because she ran off without saying good-bye to ye?" grinning even more (if it was possible), pride's dark gaze scanned peter. "and.dont.you.lie.to.me.boy." the sentence came out almost as one long word it was said so fast. shaking his head, pride glared at peter's back a moment. the longer he was a phantom, the more muddled his mind became. he was losing it. soon, he would be another crazy phantom haunting the locals.
"listen. there's still time to tell the lass that ye wish her to stay." his voice switching to a scottish brogue again. "or to say goodbye." his accent and voice changing once again, this time sounding more dark and menacing. "seriously, peter. are you really going to let her leave without saying something to her? she's going to lead this army on a suicide mission, she could die and you will still be sulking these woods still in full brooding mode while she dies." pausing, letting some distance seperate him and peter, pride grinned again. "and if you refuse to be the hero that she falls in love with...then I will be." crossing his arms over his chest, his purple gaze still glittering he waited for peter's cold glare.

inspiration - awake and alive by skillet
He'd been walking all night. He couldn't stop. If he stopped walking, he might start thinking. He didn't want to think. He wanted to fume. He wanted to stay mad. He was sure it was better that way. Anything would be better. He wouldn't let himself feel anything other than anger. He would not allow himself to feel sad or sorry or nostalgic or hurt. Just angry. Not even about anything specific like leaving so suddenly, or being unable to see anything other than the monster in him, or for making him feel this way. Confused. So confused...
No. He wasn't confused. He was angry. Just angry. Angry. Angry. Angry.
Sad? No. Hurt? No. Violent? Maybe. Angry? Yes. Angry. Nothing else. If he was angry, he wouldn't be able to think straight. He'd get over it. He feel angry, and then feel nothing. Yes. This was for the best. Angry. Just stay angry. Being angry is easy.
He kept on walking, unaware that the rest of the world around him had gone silent. It seemed as though it could sense his frustration, and it retreated. It was smart. The trees were just out of reach. Big enough rocks were even further. The animals were hiding. The ground was safe because he'd have to stop, which he couldn't do. The sky was intangible. There was nothing Peter could hit. Nothing he could choke. It would require too much thought to stop and grab a hold of something. Pride was lucky that Peter was too focused on being angry when he appeared.
First his grin. That stupid, annoying grin. And then his eyes. Always mischevious. And annoying. And then a bunch of stripes. Weird. And annoying. And then the rest of his stupid, mischevious, weird, annoying self. Peter didn't waste a second glance at him. He brushed past without really brushing past. If he'd actually touched the phantom, it might have set him off. "Somebody looks angry." Pride said from behind, his voice containing a sing-song sort of quality. Peter ignored him. Or he tried to, at least.
The thing about being angry is that your brain starts looking for more things to be angry about. So Pride's mere mention of Autumn caught his attention. His subconsious began tearing Pride's words apart, looking for shreds that could be used to fuel his anger. Peter tried to focus on the anger and ignore Pride himself. His voice was getting further away. His annoying, ever-changing voice. Was this guy seriously that crazy?
Pride paused long enough for Peter to hear himself take three more steps. "And if you refuse to be the hero that she falls in love with... then I will be." He wavered for a split second, his shoulders stiffening. And then he kept walking. He would not stop. He would not think. Pride could have her for all he cared. Be her hero. Be her boyfriend. Peter was done.
Pride, obviously not quite satisfied with Peter's response, suddenly disappeared and reappeared two feet in front of Peter. Without hesitation, Peter drew back his fist, planted his feet, and swung with all his might for the phantom's head. If Pride wanted a reaction, he'd get one. If he wanted a fight, then Peter would give him one. If Autumn didn't want Peter around anymore, then he wouldn't be. He wouldn't be...

[songs: HIM-Dead Lover's Lane. The Used- Blood on My Hands. for a smug little phantom-creature whose hell bent on pushing both peter and autumn together, pride doesn't miss much. surprisingly, the phantom is quite observant when it comes to many things and hidden emotion is most definitely something that pride is an expert at spotting. he didn't miss the secret pain that flashed in peter's gaze seconds before he nearly knocked pride's lights out, or the reaction to pride's last statement. little did peter know it at the moment, but he really didn't like what pride had to say...it hurt. obviously he was a bit more than just angry at autumn. the boy was hurt, and rightfully so. for a moment, pride thought against taking autumn's note.
he saw peter's fist coming, and even though he had a split second to react and disappear again, he didn't. pride took the hit full on, peter's fist crushing through both cartilage and bone as it snapped his nose. sending a sickening crunch through the forest. knocking him off his feet, pride landed in the dirt with a loud thud. all the wind that was in his lungs came out on a loud whoosh. the blood was everywhere, staining both his new suit and the ground around him.
of course, being a phantom, pride could have elected to avoid this pain....but he sensed peter's rage. he sensed the need to unleash that rage before it consumed him. glaring back up at peter, pride shook his head slowly. "feel better now or do you want to break it again?" he muttered, pushing himself to his feet. by the time pride stood facing peter, his nose was set and nearly completely healed by the time he met peter's gaze. "now that i have your attention....autumn didn't have much of a choice. she's the last general standing, the rest are either dead or missing. they need her to lead them, even if she's only at half mast." his gaze locked on peter, half expecting the boy to hit him again....half expecting the kid to hate him. "it was wrong of her though. she knew she had to go for weeks now, but she kept thinking that she had time. she ran out. do you really want her to die thinking that you hate her? that you didn't care?"
he was nearly reciting her letter now, though he wouldn't show the letter to peter simply because he would accept the letter as goodbye and wouldn't pause to talk to her. autumn would leave off to war thinking peter didn't care, and if prophecy is right, she would die there by rasputin's hands. "ye have one hour. one hour to get to the bus station before she ships out."
his voice finally turning ice cold, a deadly, dark tone settling in his voice. "i will see her off whether you're there or not, peter. you should know that her wound isn't completely healed yet, and there is a huge chance that autumn will fail in her mission. this could very well be the last chance you get to talk to her...."
with that, pride started to disappear in reverse order that he showed up. his body disappearing first, then his stripes, followed by his eyes and when only his grin was left, he spoke again. "don't let the lass die without at least one good kiss good bye." and with that- pride was gone...leaving peter to sulk by himself.
meanwhile, at the base of operations, autumn stood silently as she was fed another long list of orders. she was to meet up with general lee's group and help them search for the missing general. from there, they will meet up with the backups and head off to rasputin's castle. she had no time to go back into the forest and talk to peter like she planned, she didn't even have enough time to call for pride to talk to peter for her. she had finally run out of time. she was handed a duffel bag and told to pack whatever she needed in that.
she had exactly two minutes to stock that duffel bag with changes of uniform and some of her weapons before the king was at her doorway, shuffling her off toward the bus station out front. he was smiling, acting pleasant as autumn followed his footsteps with a silent scowl. she would say that he hated the king for this, but that would be treason. also, it was the king that took her in and trained her for his army.
she stood at the nearly bus station alone, staring at the forest across the street. she was half hoping that peter would race through the trees at any moment now and take her back into his arms. take her back into the forest, into their stupid little camp and leave this bloody war behind them. however, it would appear that her secret wish wouldn't come true. disappointed and feeling as if she had just been hollowed out, she turned toward the waiting bus. she had been standing on the first step of the bus when pride appeared, his nose still bleeding. "pride." setting her bag down, she stepped from the bus to give the phantom a hug. stepping back, she scowled at the wound. "now who did you piss off?". as pride exclaimed how he nearly goaded peter into punching him in the face, autumn's expression grew darker and darker. not at the fact that peter had popped her friend in the face, or the fact that pride had goaded the poor guy into doing it.....it was the fact that peter wouldn't be here. if he was angry enough to punch pride in the face, than obviously the note she left for him hadn't been good enough. for a second, she felt her heart drop.
she should have waited. she should have told peter sooner. she should have. if only she had. if only, if only.
closing her eyes for a moment, she forced a nice, neat smile for pride. "get that healed. phantoms can't be running around with bloody noses...that just looks stupid." at pride's laugh, she felt like breaking down and bawling. she wouldn't see peter. never again.
with another forced neat smile, she stepped back onto the bus. taking her seat at the back seat, she stared almost absently out the window....finally alone with her thoughts. waving one last good bye to pride, she listened silently as the bus came growling to life...slowly pulling her away from the one place she really wanted to be. now that she was alone, she didn't have to fight the tears that were now forming small waterfalls down her cheeks. feeling the sting of regret one last time as the bus began to pull out of the station's parking lot......
if only, if only.

inspiration - careful by paramore
The crunch beneath his knuckles felt good. Satisfying. Satisfaction was good. Anger and satisfaction. Maybe he could hit Pride again. Would it help him keep those feelings? Would Pride even let Peter touch him again? He waited, staring down with clenched fists at the phantom as he slowly climbed to his feet. "Feel better now or do you want to break it again?" His voice didn't even sound nasally. When Pride turned around, he realized it was because his nose had healed already. This just made Peter even more angry. His eyes were beginning to glow.
As soon as the poltergeist was standing at full height, Peter stepped forward and grabbed the front of his shirt roughly with one hand, twisting it around his fist. Pride didn't seem to notice because he just kept on talking. "Do you want her to die thinking you hate her? That you didn't care?"
The half-breed shook Pride sharply by his collar. Nobody cared more than he did! Nobody! How many times had he proven that? It was Autumn who didn't care. It was Autumn who hated him. He should hate Autumn. He wanted to hate Autumn. He did hate her a little. But not enough. He didn't hate her enough.
"Ye have one hour." Pride tolled, as if giving Peter a time limit to an ultimatum. He tried to guilt Peter into calming down. The vampire's eyes were slowly beginning to return to normal. Not just slowly... cautiously. He want to feel like this again. He wouldn't let himself feel like this again. "This could very well be the last chance you get to talk to her..." And then Pride began to disappear, slipping out of Peter's grip into nothing. "Don't let the lass leave without at least one good kiss goodbye." he said, and then he was gone.
Why couldn't Pride leave well enough alone? Peter stumbled forward, reaching out a hand from something that could support his suddenly incredibly heavy body. His hand rested on a tree and he slowly lowered himself to the ground, then dropped his head into his hands.
One hour.
Autumn would be gone in one hour. She would be shipped off to an inevitably fatal battle in one hour. She could be dead next week. She could be dead tomorrow. And he had one hour.
He tried to focus on why he was angry, but he couldn't remember. One hour. Did he want to see her again? Yes. He couldn't help it. He did. But did she want to see him? Pride seemed to think so. But if she'd wanted to say goodbye, she wouldn't have left. She would have told him, or at least left a note. Wouldn't she? No. Not necessarily. Pride made it sound like she hadn't had much of a choice, or much time. But Peter didn't know how much of what Pride had said was really the truth. He also wasn't sure he wanted to find out. Was it worth it? Could he stand not knowing?
... No. He needed to know. He suddenly couldn't stand not knowing.
His strength restored, Peter was up and moving in a flash. He had to reach the bus station. Was one hour enough time? It would have to be. Peter stretched his legs as far as he could so he could run faster. Even with superhuman speed he didn't know if he could make it. He tried focusing on Autumn, the way he had when he was angry.
Fifteen minutes passed. Thirty. Fourty five. Fifty five.
He was going to make it. He had to. Somewhere far away, a clock tolled. If his senses weren't so tuned to his surroundings, he might not have heard it. But now he could hear the hum of the bus, and he could hear Autumn's voice. She was speaking to someone in a soft tone. He was going to make it!
He could make out words now. "Phantoms... bloody noses... that just looks stupid." A few seconds later, the bus roared to life.
No!
He burst through the thick trees, practically panting from the exursion, just in time to see the bus pull away. He could just make out Autumn's profile though the dusty back window. It was too late.
He was too late.
